كان حساب التفاضل والتكامل أولَ إنجاز للرياضيات الحديثة، ويصعب المبالغة في أهميته. أرى أنه يحدّد بوضوح أكثر من أي شيء آخر بداية الرياضيات الحديثة، وما يزال نظام التحليل الرياضي، وهو تطوّره المنطقي، يمثّل أعظم تقدّم تقني في التفكير الدقيق.
