يُستخدم مصطلح «المثقف» تقليدياً للإشارة إلى الأشخاص الذين تتاح لهم، بحكم الصدفة، فرصٌ استثنائية في هذا الباب، والفرصة، كعادتها، تُلقي على صاحبها تبعةً أخلاقية.
