الطلاب الذين يتراكم عليهم الدين وهم يدفعون تكاليف دراستهم بأنفسهم، لا يرجح أن يفكّروا في تغيير المجتمع. فحين توقع الناس في فخّ الديون، لا يبقى لهم وقت للتفكير. وزيادة الرسوم الدراسية أداة من أدوات الضبط والتأديب، وحين يتخرّج الطلاب يكونون مثقلين بالديون، وقد تشرّبوا أيضًا ثقافة الانضباط. وهذا يجعلهم أجزاء فعّالة في اقتصاد الاستهلاك.
