أن تبحث في الكمّ الهائل مما قيل سلفاً عن النص الذي يشبه «مسبقاً» نصاً لاحقاً، وأن تنقّب في التاريخ لتعيد اكتشاف لعب التوقعات والأصداء، وأن تعود إلى البذور الأولى أو تمضي إلى آخر الآثار، وأن تكشف في عمل ما عن وفائه للتقليد أو تفرّده الذي لا يُختزل، وأن ترفع من رصيد أصالته أو تخفضه، وأن تقول إن نحاة بور-رويال لم يخترعوا شيئاً، أو أن تكتشف أن كوفييه كان له أسلاف أكثر مما كان يُظن، كلها تسليات بريئة للمؤرخين الذين يأبون أن يكبروا.
