الدماغ أكثر من مجموعةٍ من وحداتٍ مستقلّة، كلٌّ منها ضروريّ لوظيفةٍ ذهنيةٍ بعينها. وكلُّ واحدةٍ من هذه المناطق المتخصصة وظيفيًّا يجب أن تتفاعل مع عشراتٍ أو مئاتٍ غيرها، فيكون تكاملها الكلّي أشبه بأوركسترا معقّدة للغاية، فيها آلاف الآلات، أوركسترا تقود نفسها بنفسها، بنوتةٍ متغيّرةٍ دومًا ومقطوعاتٍ لا تنتهي.
