إنني أرى الآن أن الشر ليس «جذرياً» أبداً، بل هو قاصٍ فحسب، ولا يملك عمقاً ولا بعداً شيطانياً. إنه قادر على أن يستشري ويُخرّب العالم كله لأنه ينتشر كالفطر على السطح تماماً. وهو «يستعصي على الفكر» كما قلتُ، لأن الفكر يسعى إلى بلوغ عمق ما، إلى الجذور، فحين ينشغل بالشر يُصاب بالإحباط لأنه لا يجد شيئاً. وهذا هو «ابتذاله». الخير وحده له عمق، وهو وحده قادر على أن يكون جذرياً.
