أجمع أهل العلم على أن الأرض ساكنة في وسط الكون، ويرون أن القول بخلاف ذلك ضربٌ من المستحيل بل من السخف. غير أن النظر المتأني يكشف أن المسألة لم تُحسم بعد، فلا ينبغي احتقارها البتة. فكل تغيّر ظاهر في الموضع إنما يعود إلى حركة الجسم المرصود، أو الراصد، أو إلى تغيّر غير متساوٍ فيهما معًا.
