يحوّل الإنسان في أربع وعشرين ساعة نحو سبع أوقيات من الكربون إلى حمض الكربونيك، وتحوّل البقرة الحلوب سبعين أوقية، والحصان تسعًا وسبعين أوقية، بفعل التنفس وحده. أي أن الحصان يحرق في أعضاء تنفسه، خلال أربع وعشرين ساعة، تسعًا وسبعين أوقية من الفحم أو الكربون، ليمدّ حرارته الطبيعية في تلك المدة، لا في حالة حرة، بل في حالة اتحاد كيميائي.
