لا شك أن كثيرًا من ذكرياتنا يأوي إلى البيت بفضل البيت نفسه؛ فإذا كان البيت متقنَ البناء، فيه قبوٌ وعليّة، وزوايا وممرّات، كانت لذكرياتنا ملاذاتٌ أوضحُ معالم. طوال حياتنا نعود إليها في أحلام يقظتنا. ولذلك ينبغي للمحلّل النفسي أن يوجّه انتباهه إلى هذا التموضع البسيط لذكرياتنا. وأودّ أن أطلق اسم «التحليل المكاني» على هذا المساعد للتحليل النفسي. فالتحليل المكاني إذن هو الدراسة النفسية المنهجية لمواقع حياتنا الحميمة.
