لم أتخذ هذا الاسم، بل سمّيت نفسي كاسيوس كلاي. أما محمد علي فهو اسم شريف أعطاني إياه معلّمي وقائدي الديني، الأمير إلياس محمد، ويسرّني أن أقول إن محمد في العربية تعني «من هو جدير بالحمد»، وعلي تعني الأعلى، أما كلاي فهو اسم العبودية الذي يعني التراب الذي لا قيمة له.
