وبوجهٍ أعمّ، كان لا بدّ من تدريب المزارعين المستقلين ليصبحوا عمّالاً مطيعين في منظومة الصناعة المتوسعة. كان لا بدّ من انتزاع الأفكار الشريرة من رؤوسهم، كالاعتقاد بأن العمل بالأجر لا يختلف كثيراً عن الرقّ. وما زال ذلك مستمراً حتى اليوم، إذ يتّخذ أحياناً شكل هجومٍ على التعليم العام.
