يخدع معظم الناس أنفسهم طوعًا بإيمان مزدوج الزيف: يعتقدون في ذاكرة أبدية (للرجال والأشياء والأفعال والشعوب)، وفي تصحيح (للأفعال والأخطاء والخطايا والظلم). وكلاهما وهم. والحقيقة تقع في الطرف المقابل تمامًا: كل شيء سيُنسى، ولن يُصحَّح شيء. وكل تصحيح، من انتقام وعفو على السواء، ستبتلعه النسيان.
