لا توجد في الحضارة الحديثة مأساةٌ أعظم من العامل المسنّ المنهك، الذي يقضي حياته في جهد متواصل وإنتاج نافع، ثم لا يجد أمامه في أيامه الأخيرة سوى دار الفقراء. إنّ الوعي الاجتماعي الحديث يقتضي ترتيبًا أكثر إنسانيةً وكفاءةً.
