اسأل نفسك: هل لغتنا كاملة؟ هل كانت كذلك قبل أن يدخل إليها رموز الكيمياء، وتدوين حساب التفاضل؟ فهذه، إن صحّ القول، ضواحي لغتنا. (وكم بيتًا أو شارعًا يلزم حتى تصير البلدة مدينةً؟) يمكن النظر إلى لغتنا كمدينةٍ عتيقة: متاهةٌ من أزقّةٍ صغيرة وساحات، ومنازل قديمة وجديدة، ومنازل زيد عليها في عصورٍ شتّى؛ ويحيط بها حشدٌ من أحياءٍ جديدةٍ ذات شوارع مستقيمة منتظمة، ومنازل متماثلة.
