إن الشرق الذي يظهر في كتاب «الاستشراق» نسقٌ من التمثيلات تحيط به مجموعةٌ كاملة من القوى، أدخلت الشرقَ إلى المعرفة الغربية، وإلى الوعي الغربي، ثم إلى الإمبراطورية الغربية لاحقاً.... والشرق هو المسرح الذي يُحبس فيه الشرق كلُّه. وعلى هذا المسرح تظهر الشخصيات التي دورها أن تمثّل الكلَّ الأوسع الذي انبثقت منه. وهكذا لا يبدو الشرقُ امتداداً لا محدوداً يتجاوز العالم الأوروبي المألوف، بل حقلاً مغلقاً، ومسرحاً مسرحياً مُلحَقاً بأوروبا.
