الطين الخالص لا يتحجّر، لأن غلبة الجفاف في الأرض لا تمنحه تماسكًا، بل تجعله هشًّا متفتتًا. وعمومًا لا يتكوّن الحجر إلا بطريقتين: (أ) بتصلّب الطين، و(ب) بتجمّد [المياه].
