كان الرقّ، بمعنى حقيقي جداً، أولَ قضيةٍ دولية لحقوق الإنسان تبرز إلى الواجهة. وقد أفضى إلى اعتماد أوائل قوانين حقوق الإنسان، وإلى إنشاء أول منظمة غير حكومية لحقوق الإنسان. ومع ذلك، ورغم جهود المجتمع الدولي لمكافحة هذه الممارسة المقيتة، ما زالت منتشرة على نطاق واسع بكل صورها الخفية، القديمة منها والجديدة.
