والتمييز والحرمان المتعدد من حقوق الإنسان كثيرًا ما يكونان جزءًا من المشكلة، فيحكمان على شعوب بأكملها بالفقر... ومن المؤسف حقًا أن أكثر من نصف مليون امرأة يلقين حتفهن سنويًا جراء مضاعفات الحمل والولادة. وهذا يقارب نصف إجمالي الوفيات السنوية في العالم، وهو على الأرجح انعكاسٌ مباشر لتجريد المرأة من قدرتها على التأثير في الحياة الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والسياسية.
