تخيّل شخصاً لا تحتفظ ذاكرته بمعنى كلمة (ألم)، فيطلق هذا الاسم على أشياء مختلفة باستمرار، لكنه مع ذلك يستخدم الكلمة بما يتّفق مع الأعراض والافتراضات المعتادة للألم». وباختصار، فهو يستعملها كما نستعملها جميعاً. وهنا أودّ أن أقول: العجلة التي يمكن إدارتها دون أن يتحرّك معها شيء آخر، ليست جزءاً من الآلية.
