قلّما يستطيع أحدٌ منّا أن يتخلّى بسهولةٍ عن اعتقاده بأنّ المجتمع لا بدّ أن يكون معقولًا على نحوٍ ما. ففكرةُ أنّ الدولة فقدت عقلها، وأنها تعاقب هذا العدد الكبير من الأبرياء، فكرةٌ لا تُحتمل. ولهذا يُنكَر الدليلُ في داخل النفس.
