الديانة الهندوسية هي الوحيدة بين الأديان الكبرى في العالم التي تقوم على فكرة أن الكونَ نفسَه يمرّ بعددٍ هائلٍ، بل لا نهائيّ، من الموت والبعث. وهي الديانة الوحيدة التي تتطابق فيها مقاييسُ الزمن، ربما مصادفةً، مع مقاييس علم الكونيات الحديث. فدوراتها تمتدّ من ليلنا ونهارنا المعتادين إلى ليلٍ ونهارٍ للإله براهما، يبلغ طولهما ثمانيةَ مليارات وستمئة وأربعةً وستين مليون سنة، أي أطول من عمر الأرض والشمس، وما يقارب نصفَ الزمن المنقضي منذ الانفجار العظيم.
