المؤسساتُ الدينية التي تستخدم سلطةَ الحكومة لدعم نفسها وفرضِ آرائها على أصحاب الديانات الأخرى، أو على من لا دين لهم، تقوّض جميعَ حقوقنا المدنية. وفوق ذلك، فإن دعمَ الدولةِ لدينٍ مُعتمَد يجعل رجالَ الدين غيرَ مكترثين بأتباعهم، ويقود إلى الفساد داخل الدين نفسه. ولذلك فإنّ إقامةَ «الجدار الفاصل بين الكنيسة والدولة» أمرٌ بالغ الضرورة في مجتمعٍ حرّ.
