ينبغي ألّا ننسى أنه حين اكتُشف الراديوم لم يكن أحد يعلم أنه سيثبت نفعه في المستشفيات. كان العمل علمًا خالصًا. وهذا دليل على أن العمل العلمي لا ينبغي أن يُقاس بمنفعته المباشرة. بل يجب أن يُنجَز لذاته، من أجل جمال العلم؛ وعندئذ يبقى دائمًا احتمال أن يصبح الاكتشاف العلمي، كالراديوم، نعمةً للإنسانية.
