تعيش سوريا في المرحلة الأخيرة من جفاف استمر نحو عقد من الزمن. فخلال العقد الأخير، تعرّض المزارعون والرعاة في سوريا لخسائر فادحة، فاضطروا إلى الاستسلام والنزوح نحو المدن. وقد شكّل هذا ضغطًا هائلًا على الموارد الحضرية، وهو لا شك أحد أسباب الانتفاضة هناك.
