لا تزدهر الديمقراطية إلا حين تستحوذ على إخلاص أولئك الذين سمّاهم لينكولن عامّة الشعب. ولا تستطيع الديمقراطية أن تحفظ هذا الإخلاص إلا حين تحترم كرامتهم احترامًا كافيًا، بتنظيم المجتمع على نحوٍ يكفل لجماهير الرجال والنساء أمنًا معقولًا وأملًا في أنفسهم وفي أبنائهم.
