بعد عودتي إلى إنجلترا بدا لي أنّ اتباع منهج لايل في الجيولوجيا، وجمع كل الوقائع التي تتصل بأي وجه بتنوّع الحيوانات والنباتات في حالة الاستئناس وفي البرية، قد يُلقي بعض الضوء على الموضوع بأسره.
