لم تعد صورة الغرب بوصفه «فارس الديمقراطية» كما كانت، بل حلّ محلّها اعتقادٌ مخيّب بأنّ البراغماتية، وكثيرًا ما تكون انتهازيةً وأنانيةً، هي جوهر السياسات الغربية. وقد كان ذلك خيبة أمل مريرة لكثير من الروس، وسحقًا للمثل العليا.
