لو وُلدتَ أنتَ أو وُلدتُ أنا في خليج سولданيا، لربما لم تتجاوز أفكارنا ومفاهيمنا تلك الأفكار البهيمية لقبائل الهوتنتوت التي تسكن هناك. ولو تلقّى ملك فيرجينيا أبوشانكانا تعليماً في إنجلترا، لكان ربما عالماً لاهوتياً بارزاً وعالم رياضيات بارعاً كأيّ من أهلها. والفرق بينه وبين الإنجليزي المتحضّر يكمن في أمر واحد: أن استعمال ملكاته كان محصوراً في طرائق بلده وأعرافه وأفكاره، ولم يتوجّه قطّ إلى بحوث أو استفسارات أخرى أبعد.
