كانت طفولتي موحشة. كان والداي غائبين كثيرًا بسبب العمل، وتولّت الخادمة تربيتي في الحقيقة. وأظنّ أن هنا يكمن أصل كثير من فكاهتي. فالخادمة كانت مرحة وذكية بحق، وحين كانت أمي تعود إلى البيت كنت أستخدم الدعابة لألفت انتباهها. فإن أضحكتُ أمي، ربما يصير كل شيء على ما يرام. أظنّ أن هنا بدأ كل شيء [فكاهتي].

Not only was the maid very funny and witty, but when my mother came home I'd use humour to try and get her attention. If I made mommy laugh, then maybe everything would be all right.
