يعتقد الأمريكيون أنه يمكن تغيير الناس بالاعتناق، وأن كل إنسان في العالم أمريكيٌّ محتمل. والصينيون يعتقدون أيضاً أن قيمهم عالمية، لكنهم لا يعتقدون أنه يمكن للمرء أن يصير صينياً بالاعتناق، ما لم يُولد في كنفها.
