يبدو أن الطور الليبرالي والطور المحافظ في حياة الإنسان يتعاقبان كالأمواج منذ ولادته. الأطفال ثوريون، والشبان محافظون مع شيء من الإهمال الذي يقارب الجريمة. والرجال في ذروة عمرهم ليبراليون، ما دام هضمهم يواكب عقولهم. أما متوسطو العمر فيلجؤون إلى الملاذ: يؤمّنون حياتهم، ويحررون وصاياهم، ويجمعون التذكارات والطاولات الصغيرة، ويأملون في الأمان. ثم يأتي الشيخوخة، فتعيد الطفولة، زمنًا مليئًا بالنزوات والحزن، لكنه كثيرًا ما يكون مليئًا بالشجاعة وحتى بالنبوءة.
