ليس ثمة جريمة أشنع من نقض الحقيقة. ومن الواضح أن البشر لا يستطيعون أن يظلّوا كائنات اجتماعية ما داموا لا يصدّق بعضهم بعضًا. فإذا لم يُستعمل الكلام إلا وسيلةً لنقل الكذب، انفصل كلّ امرئ عن غيره، وأوى إلى كهفه وحده، لا يطلب الصيد إلا لنفسه.
