يتناول الطب أحوال الصحة والمرض في جسم الإنسان. ومن المسلَّمات الفلسفية أن المعرفة الكاملة بالشيء لا تُنال إلا بإيضاح أسبابه وسوابقه، بشرط أن تكون لها أسباب موجودة بالفعل. ولذلك يلزم في الطب أن تُحدَّد أسباب الصحة وأسباب المرض معًا.
