الانفعال العظيم أنانيّ أكثر من اللازم؛ يستحوذ على كلّ دم الروح، فيترك الاحتقان اليدين باردتين أكثر من أن تكتبا. ثلاثة أنواع من الانفعال تنتج الشعر العظيم: انفعالات قوية لكنها سريعة، تُلتقط للفن بمجرّد أن تمضي، لا قبل أن تمضي؛ وانفعالات قوية وعميقة تبقى في الذاكرة زمناً طويلاً بعد ذلك؛ وانفعالات زائفة، أي انفعالات يُشعر بها في العقل. ليس الصدق الزائف، بل الصدق المُترجَم هو أساس كلّ فن.
