الفعل الجوهريّ للحرب هو التدمير، لا بالضرورة تدمير أرواح البشر، بل تدمير نتاج عمل الإنسان. فالحرب وسيلةٌ لتحطيم المواد، أو قذفها إلى طبقات الجوّ العليا، أو إغراقها في أعماق البحر، وهي مواد كان يمكن أن تُستخدم لجعل الجماهير أكثر رفاهية، ومن ثمّ، على المدى البعيد، أكثر ذكاءً.
