الإنسان... لا يعرف إلا متى يرضى ومتى يتألم، ولا تعلّمه بذاته إلا آلامُه ورضاه، فهما يهديانه إلى ما ينبغي أن يطلبه وما ينبغي أن يتجنبه. أما سوى ذلك، فالإنسان كائنٌ مرتبك؛ لا يعرف من أين أتى ولا إلى أين يمضي، ويعرف القليل عن العالم، وأقلّ من ذلك عن نفسه.
