مما قيل نستطيع أن ندرك بوضوح طبيعة الحب والكراهية. فالحب ليس سوى لذّةٍ مصحوبةٍ بفكرة سببٍ خارجيّ، والكراهية ليست سوى ألمٍ مصحوبٍ بفكرة سببٍ خارجيّ. ونرى كذلك أن من يحبّ يسعى بالضرورة إلى أن يظلّ محبوبه حاضرًا لديه ويحرص على بقائه، بينما من يكره يسعى إلى إزالة موضوع كراهيته وتدميره.
