لستُ أتحدث عن تفاؤل أعمى، ذلك الأمل الذي يتجاهل ضخامة المهام التي أمامنا أو العقبات التي تعترض طريقنا. ولستُ أتحدث عن مثالية واهمة تدعونا إلى القعود على الهامش أو التملّص من المعركة. لقد آمنتُ دائمًا بأن الأمل هو ذلك الشيء العنيد في داخلنا، الذي يصرّ، رغم كل الأدلة على العكس، على أن شيئًا أفضل ينتظرنا، ما دمنا نملك الشجاعة على مواصلة السعي، ومواصلة العمل، ومواصلة الكفاح.
