تستخدم هذه النخبة المتنفذة مباشرةً عدة ملايين من القوى العاملة في البلاد، في مصانعها ومكاتبها ومتاجرها، وتُحكم سيطرتها على ملايين أخرى بإقراضهم المال لشراء منتجاتها، وعبر امتلاكها وسائل الإعلام الجماهيري تؤثر في أفكار الناس ومشاعرهم وأفعالهم، تقريباً في الجميع. ولأتحدث بلسان تشرشل ساخراً: لم يُتلاعَب بهذا العدد الكبير من الناس قط، على أيدي هذا العدد القليل.
