العدل ليس شفاءً. الشفاء لا يأتي إلا بالمعاناة والصبر، ولا يطالب بشيء، ولا حتى بالعدل. والعدل لا يعمل إلا ضمن حدود الأشياء كما هي... ولذلك، وإن كان العدل خيرًا في ذاته ولا يبتغي شرًّا أكثر، فإنه لا يستطيع إلا أن يُديم الشرَّ الذي كان، ولا يمنعه من أن يُثمر حزنًا.
