لم يَعُدْ يُذكر التسامح كما لو كان تفضّلًا من فئةٍ من الناس على أخرى، فتتمتع الثانية بممارسة حقوقها الطبيعية المتأصّلة فيها. فلحسن الحظ، إنّ حكومة الولايات المتحدة، التي لا تمنح التعصّب أيَّ سند، ولا تقدّم للاضطهاد أيَّ عون، لا تشترط على من يعيشون في ظلّها إلا أن يسلكوا سلوك المواطنين الصالحين.
