إنّ العفو والمصالحة مع أعدائنا أو مع أحبائنا لا يعنيان التظاهر بأن الأمور غير ما هي عليه. ولا يعنيان أن نربّت على ظهور بعضنا ونغضّ الطرف عن الظلم. فالمصالحة الحقيقية تكشف هول الواقع، والإساءة، والأذى، والحقيقة. وقد تزيد الأمور سوءاً في بعض الأحيان. إنها مغامرة محفوفة بالمخاطر، لكنها في النهاية تستحق العناء، لأن الشفاء الحقيقي لا يأتي في النهاية إلا من مواجهة صادقة مع الواقع. أما المصالحة السطحية فلا تجلب إلا شفاءً سطحياً.
