إن كان هو فاعلها، فهو رجل ذكي جدًا، وقد خطط لحربه منذ زمن طويل. أذكر آخر مرة التقيته فيها عام 1997 في أفغانستان. قال لي بن لادن: «من هذا الجبل الذي تجلس عليه يا سيد روبرت، هزمنا الجيش الروسي وأسهمنا في تفكيك الاتحاد السوفيتي. وأدعو الله أن يتيح لنا أن نحوّل أمريكا إلى ظلٍّ لنفسها». وحين رأيت صور نيويورك بلا مركز التجارة العالمي، بدت نيويورك ظلًّا لنفسها.
