لقد أربك «المتنكّرُ الكبير» للشر كلَّ مفاهيمنا الأخلاقية. فأن يظهر الشرُّ متخفّيًا في ثوب النور والإحسان والضرورة التاريخية أو العدالة الاجتماعية، أمرٌ محيّرٌ لمن نشأ على مفاهيمنا الأخلاقية التقليدية، أما المسيحيُّ الذي يبني حياته على الكتاب المقدس، فإن ذلك لا يزيده إلا تأكيدًا على الخبث الأصيل في الشر.
