أُكِنّ احترامًا كبيرًا للعلم، لكن لو سنّت الحكومة قانونًا يُلزمني بأداء قسم الولاء له، فلا أظن أنني سأفعل. لطالما شعرت أنني أعيش في بلدٍ... إن شئتُ أن أعبد الله معمدانيًا فعلت، وإن كنتُ ملحدًا فلي أن أكون كذلك، وإن أردتُ أن أكون كاثوليكيًا وولدتُ يهوديًا، فلا تُوجَّه إليّ أي إدانة من السلطة الحاكمة.
