أما أصنام السوق فهي أشدّ الأصنام إزعاجاً جميعاً، وهي التي تسلّلت إلى الفهم عبر ارتباطها بالألفاظ والأسماء. ذلك أن الناس يحسبون أن عقولهم تتحكم في الألفاظ، لكنّ الألفاظ تَلوي الفهم وتُعوّجه. وهذا ما جعل الفلسفة والعلوم خاملةً عاجزة. فالألفاظ تُصاغ في الغالب على المألوف الشائع، وترسم الفروق الأكثر بداهةً عند عامّة الفهم. فكلما أرادت فطنةٌ أعمق أو ملاحظةٌ أدقّ أن تعدّل تلك الحدود لتطابق الفروق الحقيقية للطبيعة، احتجّت الألفاظ.
