إن الدين نفسه لا يسعه إلا أن يكون متحركاً، ولذلك فإن تعبير "العودة" غير دقيق. فالعودة إلى أشكال الدين التي ربما وُجدت قبل قرنين من الزمن مستحيلة تماماً. بل على العكس، فلكي يتصدّى الدين للأخلاقيات المادية الحديثة، ولكي يحارب العدمية والأنانية، كما يجب عليه، لا بد له أن يتطور، وأن يكون مرناً في أشكاله، وأن يتواءم مع الأشكال الثقافية للعصر.
