حبّ الجمهورية في الديمقراطية هو حبّ الديمقراطية، لأن هذه الأخيرة هي حبّ المساواة. وحبّ الديمقراطية هو كذلك حبّ التقشّف. ولما كان على كل فرد هنا أن يتمتع بالسعادة نفسها والمزايا نفسها، فينبغي لهم بالتالي أن يذوقوا اللذات ذاتها ويكوّنوا الآمال ذاتها، وهذا لا يُرتجى إلا من تقشّفٍ عام.
