المجتمع الذي يتّحد أعضاؤه بأنهم يفكّرون بالطريقة ذاتها تجاه عالم المقدّس وعلاقته بعالم الدنيوي، وبأنهم يترجمون هذه الأفكار المشتركة إلى ممارساتٍ مشتركة، هو ما يُسمّى كنيسة. وفي التاريخ كلّه، لا نجد دينًا واحدًا بلا كنيسة.
