حتى أكثر الشغف أنانيةً يحمل في طيّاته قدراً كبيراً من إنكار الذات. ومن المدهش أن ندرك أن ما نسمّيه السعي المفرط إلى الذات هو في حقيقته تخلٍّ عنها. فالبخيل، والمهووس بالصحة، وملاحق المجد ومن شابههم، لا يقصرون كثيراً عن الزاهدين في ممارسة التضحية بالنفس.
